Fire Department Satisfied, Detected Heat Poses No Danger

16 February 2022

Parliament, Wednesday, 16 February 2022 – The Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service Department officials who responded to heat detected at certain spots in the basement of the gutted National Assembly building this afternoon have, after conducting the inspection, expressed satisfaction that the heat posed no potential for flare-up or danger to anyone.

Structural engineers from the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure, currently conducting inspections inside the fire-damaged National Assembly Building, earlier today picked up some heat in the basement of the building and had immediately called the Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service Department.

As stressed earlier, this was a precautionary measure, and there was no immediate danger to either the inspectors or the general parliamentary community.

The fire department will submit a full report on this to Parliament.
