Parliament’s Presiding Officers – the Speaker of the National Assembly and the Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces – assure all South Africans that constructing a new Parliament building is no ordinary project. “It is one of the most historic and crucial national endeavours. This undertaking transcends mere bricks and mortar,” they said. “It is about shaping our future, realising the collective hopes and aspirations of every South African. This project belongs to each and every citizen. It is a shared venture and, in that spirit, every South African will be afforded the opportunity to voice their opinions and contribute to the decision-making process regarding the design and functionality of their Parliament.”
In living out this commitment to collaboration and public participation, we have engaged CPUT, Stellenbosch University, and the City of Cape Town to serve on the Gateway Review Process as per the Treasury Framework for Infrastructure Delivery and Procurement Management.
The building project also creates employment opportunities and learnerships. We have created opportunities for 30 learners from CPUT and Stellenbosch University in professional services. These learners and together with an additional 10 unemployed graduates will get an opportunity to prepare them for professional registration. We will further give work-integrated learning opportunities to about 100 learners from TVET Colleges during construction. This will assist them in their goals for achieving apprenticeship.
We now invite the public to actively engage in shaping the future of our National Assembly. Your input is invaluable in refining the design principles that will guide the restoration and transformation of this iconic institution. We want to hear your vision for what the National Assembly should represent - whether it's reflecting our diverse cultural heritage, embracing sustainability, or fostering innovation. This is your opportunity to be part of a historic project that goes beyond brick and mortar.
Join us in this collaborative effort to rebuild not just a physical structure but also the very essence of our democracy and cultural heritage. You can share your ideas, rate the principles you believe should inform the designs, and take a virtual tour of the precinct here. Have your say.
Let's make this the People's Project, where your voice help shape the future of our nation.
